How Acupuncture can Boost Fertility

An interesting article published by Netdoctor in January 2019, highlighted a little of our current understanding about how acupuncture can boost fertility levels.  Women’s health expert Emma Cannon explains:

“Acupuncture improves blood flow to the ovaries and endometrium (womb lining). It also stimulates the hypothalamus which controls hormones, calms the mind and reduces stress, and improves LH (luteinising hormone) levels associated with ovulation.”

Emma also acknowledges the important role of acupuncture in reducing the stress and anxiety often associated with fertility treatment.

The article also discusses the important research in 2018 which found acupuncture to have a significant treatment effect in improving the birth rates of sub-fertile women undergoing IVF or ICSI.  A particularly interesting finding is that the effectiveness of acupuncture may be dose-dependent, with a sufficient number of treatments being required over an adequate period of time.  This has been a long-held belief supported by many acupuncture practitioners.  More specifically, treatment during the ovarian stimulation phase as well as at the time of embryo transfer, may be particularly valuable.
