New York Times: Acupuncture Can Ease Wrist Pain In Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The New York Times has highlighted some interesting research findings which illustrate some of the benefits of acupuncture for wrist pain.  In the study, which included 80 participants with mild to moderate wrist pain.  Using MRI and nerve conduction tests, the researchers studied the effects of acupuncture on the brain and nerves.

The group of patients receiving the acupuncture treatment had measureable physiological improvements in pain centres in the brain and nerves.

Vitaly Napadow, the senior author of the study and a researcher at Harvard said:

“What’s really interesting here is that we’re evaluating acupuncture using objective outcomes.  Sham acupuncture was good at relieving pain temporarily, but true acupuncture had objective physiological — and enduring — effects.  Acupuncture is a safe, low-risk, low side-effect intervention.  It’s perfect for a first-line approach, and it’s something patients should consider before trying more invasive procedures like surgery.”

The full study was published in the Journal of Neurology -Brain.  Read more from the journal here.

Becoming a Mother….

I know how much you enjoy reading the stories of others, and their experiences of acupuncture.  Louise from the Fylde coast had been trying to conceive for three years before beginning a course of acupuncture with me.  Here is a little of what she had to say….

“Acupuncture kept me calm and relaxed and supported my pregnancy.  Your professionalism, support and skill throughout was key to my success and happy outcome.  My journey was a long and challenging one, but I knew I was going to get there when I started treatment with yourself because I had the confidence in you.  Thanks so much for helping me to become a mother”.

Fertility Journeys with A Happy Ending in Lancashire

Everyday I see the benefits that acupuncture brings to my clients and I see many, many fertility journeys with happy endings, which makes my job a hugely rewarding one.  Everyone’s story is unique and the often challenging path to parenthood goes largely unspoken about in the wider world.

So over the next few months, with the kind permission of the parents involved, I will be sharing some of the fertility stories I have had the huge privilege of having a part in.  These stories show, in a wonderfully personal way, the role that acupuncture treatment has played.  Today here is Rachel’s story in her own words.

My husband and I had been trying to conceive for over a year, but it was proving very difficult. I had been on the contraception Pill for 10 years and when we decided to start trying for a baby I had a lot of trouble with irregular monthly cycles.

After numerous doctors appointments and blood tests I decided to research other ways to try to help us conceive, this is when I came across Acupuncture and Charlotte’s website. I decided to contact Charlotte for more information. From my first consultation I knew I had found the right person to help us! Charlotte is very friendly, reassuring, always optimistic about getting results and is genuinely concerned for my well-being. After my first Acupuncture session I felt extremely positive about the road ahead.

After the first few sessions I noticed a huge difference in my body and four months after my initial consultation I was pleased to announce my pregnancy. I am now 35 weeks pregnant and looking forward to the arrival of our first baby. I just wanted to say a huge thank you to Charlotte for the Acupuncture treatment I have received over the past year, without it I am unsure as to whether we would be in this situation.

I would strongly recommend Acupuncture to anyone who is struggling with irregular monthly cycles or is having fertility issues. I thoroughly enjoy my Acupuncture sessions and look forward to visiting Charlotte for my treatment.

How to Clear a Blocked Nose with Acupressure

Acupressure is a needle-free alternative to acupuncture and can be very effective.  As published in Essentials on 1st December 2014, acupressure to the acupuncture point LI20 (this translates from Chinese to ‘welcome fragrance’) can help to unblock the nose and restore a sense of smell, which is very helpful at this time of year.

So to give it a try first find the acupuncture point LI20.  This can be found at either side of the widest part of the nostril, where the smile lines run.  Next press firmly or gently massage this location at both sides of the nose for a few minutes, and breath more easily!  To read the original article click here and download the PDF.

Fertility Success is an Inspiration to Others

If you are on your own fertility journey you may be interested to read an article that appeared in Hello magazine in April 2014. Journalist and broadcaster Kate Silverton talks about her own experiences, including the heartbreak of miscarriage and the sadness at being told that her chances of conceiving were negligible.

Kate’s story is one of real triumph over adversity as at the age of 43, Kate is now awaiting the arrival of her second child. Kate talks about the steps she took to be in the best possible shape physically, emotionally and mentally, and includes acupuncture as her treatment of choice. Kate explains “I turned to acupuncture knowing there is increasing evidence that it supports fertility”.

Acupuncture & Arthritis

A new report by Arthritis Research UK published in January 2013, found that acupuncture was one of the most effective treatments for osteoarthritis, lower back pain and fibromyalgia.

The report also concluded that acupuncture was one of the most studied and effective complementary medicines in the area of musculoskeletal disease.

We hope that the findings of this study will give patients greater confidence, when making the decision to choose acupuncture for the treatment of osteoarthritis, lower back pain and fibromyalgia.

Acupuncture & Stress Management

An article published in P3 on 1st October 2012, highlighted the issue of stress and its increasing impact on our health.  In particular the article discussed the importance of sleep for maintaining our mental wellbeing.

The Great British Sleep Survey found that 30% of the population suffers from insomnia.   Recent NHS data found that in the 12 months up to May this year, there had been over 6300 hospital admissions in England due to stress.  In addition autumn is a challenging time for many people with the seasonal transition and increased levels of darkness.

When considering ways to manage stress and sleep issues the P3 article points to acupuncture as one solution.  It says:

Traditional acupuncture is known to be enormously beneficial for helping to correct sleep problems.  It originated in China over 2000 years ago and is used by many people in the UK as a recognised option within standard healthcare.

Walnuts May Improve Male Fertility

An article published in Biology of Reproduction in August 2012, revealed that 75 mg of walnuts a day improves the vitality, motility and morphology of sperm.  This is particularly interesting as it is thought that between 30 and 50% of fertility problems are attributable to the male partner.  Pollutants, lifestyle and diet have been identified as probable causes

Acupuncture When You Have a Cold

There is no better time than now, to consider a course of acupuncture treatment.  As we move into the autumn months many people begin to feel they need a boost before the winter months ahead.   As reported in the latest edition of Woman’s Weekly magazine, acupuncture is a great way to stay well and get over cold and flu bugs more quickly.

Woman’s Weekly says… “Japanese researchers reported that volunteers given acupuncture had significantly fewer cold symptoms than those who didn’t have treatment.  Acupuncture treats the whole person rather than just the disease, and does this by influencing the flow of energy which is equivalent to the immune system.  If you have a cold, acupuncture will strengthen your system as well as expelling the cold virus”.
